Rights of Nature (presentation)

A visit from Anahkwet (Guy Reiter) as pulpit guest March 26, 2023 at Unitarian Universalist Church West
Picture
Anahkwet, executive director of Menīkānaehkem on the Menominee Indian Reservation, shared his background and the organization's initiatives, including food growing, youth programs, environmental advocacy, and buffalo reintroduction. He discussed the 12–15 year fight against
the Back 40 sulfide mine on the Menominee River, a site central to Menominee history.

He then explained the "rights of nature" legal framework, which grants ecosystems rights to exist and thrive, contrasting it with current environmental laws that allow ecosystem harm. He tied this concept to Indigenous worldviews and sacred Menominee language.

Anahkwet explained the White Earth Nation’s Rights of Manoomin law and lawsuit against Minnesota over Line 3 and lack of consultation. He concluded by sharing his personal motivation for activism and calling

for community unity and elder wisdom to protect the environment for future generations.
